In Maitland, there are two types of playspaces – the smaller ‘local’ version for younger children and the larger ‘district’ version which provides for all abilities and ages where practical.

In order to provide sufficient and safe playspace instrastructure that is up to date with current trends, an independent audit was conducted in 2023 to assess the quality and distribution of playspaces across the Maitland LGA.

Following the completion of the independent audit, we sought community input to inform the future of our playspace development.

We asked a range of questions to determine what our community needs and wants from a playspace, including what you consider a reasonable distance to travel and whether you would rather see more local or district playspaces.

The survey is now closed. Thank you for providing feedback about the future of Maitland's playspaces. We are analysing your responses and preparing a final report, which will be submitted to Council and then placed on public exhibition for your review.

What's the difference between a local and district playspace?

  • Local playspace

    Local playspaces usually sit within local parks within a 500-600m (radius) walking distance of surrounding residents, providing play experiences for children aged 0-12 years.

    The limited amount of play equipment and supporting infrastructure, usually result in a short stay.

  • District playspaces

    District playspaces are larger than local playspaces, often co-located with other community or recreation infrastructure, such as ovals, and found within a 3km radius of most residences.

    They offer a greater variety of play elements for all age groups and abilities, where practical. Supporting infrastructure such as parking, toilets, picnic tables and seating, encourage longer stays over two hours.
