At its meeting on 28 January 2025, Maitland City Council unanimously supported a proposal to rename the new Melville Ford Bridge — currently under construction — in honour of the late Milton Morris AO.
Milton Morris, affectionately known as ‘Mr Maitland,’ served as the Member for Maitland for 25 years and was a strong advocate for road safety and infrastructure. As NSW Minister for Transport, he introduced landmark road safety measures such as compulsory seatbelts, breathalysers, and the L and P-plate licensing system. He was named an Officer of the Order of Australia and inducted into Maitland’s Hall of Fame.
Council is now inviting community feedback on the proposal to rename the bridge the Milton Morris Bridge, in recognition of his legacy and long-standing contribution to the Maitland community. This feedback will help inform the next steps, including discussions with the Geographical Names Board of NSW.
