Thank you to everyone who shared their feedback on the proposal to rename the new Melville Ford Bridge to the Milton Morris Bridge. Council will review all submissions and use the feedback to inform the next steps, including discussions with the Geographical Names Board of NSW. Updates will be provided on this page as the project progresses.

At its meeting on 28 January 2025, Maitland City Council unanimously supported a proposal to rename the new Melville Ford Bridge — currently under construction — in honour of the late Milton Morris AO.

Milton Morris, affectionately known as ‘Mr Maitland,’ served as the Member for Maitland for 25 years and was a strong advocate for road safety and infrastructure. As NSW Minister for Transport, he introduced landmark road safety measures such as compulsory seatbelts, breathalysers, and the L and P-plate licensing system. He was named an Officer of the Order of Australia and inducted into Maitland’s Hall of Fame.
