Engagement outcomes of speed changes for high pedestrian activity areas

Earlier this year, we spoke to our community about proposed road changes in two key areas to improve pedestrian safety:

  • High Street, Maitland (between Ward Street and Victoria Street)
  • Belmore Road, Lorn (from the Avenue to 90 metres north of Allan Street).

  • We collected over 100 online responses and recorded nearly 1,000 views and over 50 downloads for both the High Street and Belmore Road concept plans. This feedback will help inform the final designs and reports presented to the Local Traffic Committee and Transport for NSW.

Thank you to everyone who contributed ideas and suggestions via the survey.

    Thank you for your input

Thank you for everyone who provided feedback on our proposed safety changes. The survey has now closed and we are now reviewing your input for incorporation into the final plan which will be presented to the Traffic Committee.

    Making our streets safer

We're proposing important safety changes to two areas in Maitland with high pedestrian activity:

    • High Street, Maitland (between Ward Street and Victoria Street)
    • Belmore Road, Lorn (from the Avenue to 90 metres north of Allan Street).

These precincts experience substantial pedestrian activity throughout the day, and the combination of high pedestrian traffic and vehicle volumes poses safety risks. We aim to reduce these risks and prevent accidents that could result in fatalities or serious injuries by introducing 40km/h zones, with signage and pavement markings and traffic calming devices like raised pavement crossings or road cushions.

The proposed traffic management changes were available for your review and feedback between Monday 6 May and Monday 3 June 2024.

    Belmore Road, Lorn

We propose a maximum speed limit of 40km/h for Belmore Road from The Avenue to 90 metres north of Allan Street in Lorn. The concept plans show:

    • Gateway treatment at the entry points to the 40km/h HPAA, which includes signage and pavement markings
    • Repeater treatment (additional '40' signs and pavement markings at two locations.
    • Traffic calming device: introducing a raised pavement crossing instead of the existing pedestrian crossing out front of Nilo Infants School.

    High Street, Maitland

On High Street in Maitland, we're proposing to introduce a 40km.h zone between Ward Street and Victoria Street.

    The concept plans below detail:

    • Location of the proposed 40 km/h High Pedestrian Activity Area
    • Proposed entry and exit treatments of signage and pavement markings
    • Placement of a road cushion traffic calming device between Rose Street and Smith Street.
