Electric Vehicle Charging Policy adopted

5 June 2025

Maitland City Council has officially adopted its Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure on Public Land Policy, following a period of public exhibition from 12 December 2024 to 2 February 2025.

The policy sets the framework for the installation and management of electric vehicle charging infrastructure (EVCI) on Council-managed public land. It aims to support the growing demand for electric vehicles, improve access to public charging options, and encourage sustainable transport across the Maitland region.

As part of the policy, a cost recovery model has been introduced to ensure the long-term viability of Council-operated charging stations. From 12 March 2025, a fee of 30 cents per kWh (including GST) applies at all Council-owned and operated EV charging sites.

The policy also allows for third-party Charge Point Operators (CPOs) to install and manage charging stations under lease or licence agreements with Council. Site selection criteria have been developed to ensure charging infrastructure is installed in locations that are accessible, safe, and close to amenities.

Community feedback played a valuable role in shaping the policy, with residents showing strong support for expanding EV charging access, particularly in areas near cafes, visitor centres and public facilities.
