Community experiences of previous flood impacts across Maitland.

The most recent Floodplain Risk Management Study for Maitland was completed in 2015 and covered the entire Hunter River floodplain.

In recent years, Maitland has been impacted by flood events, most notably in July 2022. New modelling and an updated Floodplain Risk Management Study will allow Maitland City Council to more effectively and accurately identify flood risk, anticipate impacts and assess management options into the future.

Local knowledge is vital in understanding the behaviour and effects of flooding and will help Maitland City Council better understand how floods happen in the catchment and allow for better management of flood hazards.

Consultation is now closed and we're currently reviewing your data to develop the plan.

Flooding on Maitland Vale Rd, Rosebrook

Flooding and road closures at the Rosebrook Lagoon is often accompanied by flooding at the Lambs Valley end of Maitland Vale Rd, resulting in residents being unable to leave the area at all. Many business people in this area can therefore not attend work or buy groceries or even access medical care in an emergency. It would be necessary to raise the road at this point quite considerably, as previous road raising has not been sufficient.

Only one way out.

The main issue that came from the 2022 flood for residents in Horseshoe Bend was that there was only one way out over the Belmore Bridge. An effort is needed to raise the New England Hwy from High St at the rail bridge to East Maitland. There was a metre of water over the Hwy and High street from the bridge. If a flood was to rise and top the Levy a second route out of Maitland is needed. Getting out of Horseshoe Bend took some hour and a half in 2022. There were three columns of traffic all…

Regent Street in the 2022 flood

We live in Regent St and during the last flood had rapid flooding from the south. All landholders in the area with stock had significant difficulty and little time to respond. Some of residents of Regent St that back onto Telarah Lagoon suffered rapid flooding of their homes with concomitant losses. Many such residents are retirees or elderly. We understand that we live in a floodplain but there were no offers of support from police or SES. When I reviewed the Flood Management Plan it is…
