Social Sustainability Supporting Plan
The Social Sustainability Supporting Plan promotes inclusive, long-term community initiatives designed to foster collaboration, strengthen connections and enhance wellbeing for all residents.
We're developing a strategic roadmap for how Council partners with government agencies, community services and the private sector to address community needs, provide support and help our residents thrive. The Social Strategy will aim to:

We understand that our community faces a range of social challenges and require different kinds of support to feel connected and valued. As part of our Social Strategy, we’ll develop a series of supporting plans that outline how we’ll tailor support to meet the diverse challenges and desires of the Maitland community. You can find out more about these plans below.
The Social Sustainability Supporting Plan promotes inclusive, long-term community initiatives designed to foster collaboration, strengthen connections and enhance wellbeing for all residents.
The Multicultural Communities Supporting Plan celebrates Maitland’s diversity and works to remove barriers, ensuring equal access to services and opportunities for everyone.
The Community Disaster Preparedness and Resilience Plan focuses on collaboration, education and local action to strengthen community preparedness, response and recovery from emergencies and natural disasters.
The Disability Inclusion Action Plan outlines Council’s commitment to accessibility, inclusive communities, equal opportunities, and recognising the rights and contributions of people with disability.
The Youth Supporting Plan aims to address the needs and challenges of young people aged 12 to 24 years old, supporting their growth, wellbeing and opportunities in Maitland.
The Ageing Well Supporting Plan responds to the opportunities and challenges of our ageing population, supporting older residents to live healthy, connected lives.
The Children and Families Supporting Plan highlights Council's commitment to fostering childhood development, family safety and strengthening social connections.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Supporting Plan reflects Council's commitment to working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to strengthen relationships, overcome barriers and expand opportunities.
The Vulnerable Communities Supporting Plan aims to provide support and access to services for people experiencing hardship, including homelessness, to enhance safety and wellbeing.
Maitland’s Social Strategy is for every resident.
Our community are at the very core of what makes Maitland the heart of the Hunter. We want everyone to feel like they are part of a connected and thriving city.
We recognise that some parts of our community are more likely to face social and economic barriers that prevent them from accessing resources, finding support and participating in all aspects of social life.
Our Social Strategy will be underpinned by a series of supporting plans which will be tailored to different parts of our community. Using this approach ensures that the actions we have committed to as part of this strategy are specific, informed and meaningful.
We are currently developing nine supporting plans, including, young people aged 12 to 24, older residents, children and families, multicultural communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, individuals experiencing hardship, social sustainability initiatives and community disaster preparedness and resilience.
Additional demographic groups may be added in future iterations of the Social Strategy as new needs emerge. As this is the first iteration, there will be opportunity to regularly review and ensure the document aligns with changing community needs and trends.
Maitland’s Social Strategy guides the planning and delivery of social and community development programs and initiatives. It supports the community’s priorities and objectives as identified in Maitland’s Future, our Community Strategic Plan. It is a critical part of the Integrated Planning and Reporting (IPR) Framework.
Our shared vision is for a connected city with thriving communities. To achieve this, we collaborate with various stakeholders, including other levels of government, the community services sector, educational institutions and community groups.
Depending on the activity, Council may deliver programs directly, partner with others, or advocate on behalf of the community. By building partnerships, taking a strong leadership role and delivering on our commitments, Council plays a key role in shaping our city and making Maitland a place where our residents feel connected and thrive.
We’re just at the beginning of the journey, and there will be many opportunities to connect and have your say over the next 18 months. Here are some next steps:
We acknowledge the Wonnarua People as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land within the Maitland Local Government Area. Council pays respect to all Aboriginal Elders, past, present and future with a spiritual connection to these lands.
