As part of our Social Strategy, we’re developing a series of supporting plans that outline how we’ll tailor support to meet the diverse challenges and needs of the Maitland community.

Maitland is home to many cultures and this diversity is central to our identity. The Multicultural Communities Supporting Plan will help build a more informed, connected and cohesive community where people of all cultural backgrounds can belong and thrive.

We want your input to shape programs, services and initiatives that aim to:

  • promote inclusion and cultural safety in public spaces and services
  • support people from all backgrounds to participate fully in community life
  • celebrate the rich cultural diversity that makes Maitland unique
  • build a community where everyone feels welcomed, valued and supported.

Have your say by taking our short survey, quick poll or completing our social wellbeing census by Tuesday 31 March 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Multiculturalism has various meanings across different communities. Broadly, it refers to the respectful inclusion and valuing of cultural, linguistic and religious diversity, recognising differences in background such as country of origin, traditions and language.

Cultural safety is more than just being aware of other cultures and respecting all people. It’s about recognising our own cultural views and being open to others, so that no one feels judged or excluded. It also means understanding that there are many valid ways of thinking and working, not just our own.
